September 16, 2021 by Ross Wilson. 60 years ago, any child wanting to play tennis would have to use an adult racket with standard balls. Manufacturers did not make separate balls or rackets for children. Back then, 10-year-olds would be expected to play with a full-size adult racket. It may come as a surprise for you that the use of smaller rackets, slower balls, and reduced-sized courts only really took off in the 21st century.
For example, 5-year-olds are going to use a 19” junior racquet. Ages 5-8 are going to need a 21” or 23” racquet depending on how tall they are for their age. And 9-10-year-olds are going to want a 25” racquet. If your child is 10+ then a 26” racquet is required.
First thing’s first: if your 12 year old hasn’t already switched to an adult sized racket, now is the perfect time to do so. While the category of “adult size” can be deceiving, almost all 12 year olds are ready to play with a full sized racket, especially if they have experience playing the sport.
